Intro:
Devil May Cry 2 is the second game in the series, as its name would suggest. It came out in
2003, two years after the first game. Chronologically, the events of Devil May Cry 2 take place
between the 4 th and 5 th installments. Their goal was to make this game much bigger compared
to the first game in both concept and environments. The original creator of Devil May Cry,
Hideki Kamiya, was not asked to return for the sequel. Instead, it was granted to a different
branch of Capcom which specialized in arcade games. This contributed to the tonal difference,
with notable changes to Dante’s personality and to the difficulty of game play.
Story:
DMC2 opens with Dante entering a museum where an artifact called the Medaglia is found.
Unbeknownst to him, a woman named Lucia enters the same museum. Together, they defeat a
group of demons. Lucia then enlists Dante’s help on Dumary Island.
On the island, Dante meets Lucia’s mother, Matier, a woman who fought demons alongside
Sparda. Matier and Lucia request Dante’s aid in fighting Arius, a businessman who is using
demonic power for his own gain. Arius’s plan is to enlist a demon named Argosax the Chaos,
who will grant him supreme power over the world.
In response to their request for aid, Dante flips a coin. He agrees to help when the coin lands on
heads. Matier and Lucia then discuss the Arcana, items that Arius is collecting in order to
summon Argosax.
Arius reveals to Lucia that he created her. He gets away using magic, and Lucia delivers the last
of the Arcana to Dante. She leaves, heading back to Arius in order to fight him. Dante then tries
to pass the Arcana to Matier, who requests that he use the items to save Lucia. He again flips
his coin, agreeing to help when it lands on heads.
Arius captures Lucia, trading her to Dante for the Arcana. Dante accepts this trade, then attacks
Arius. During the fight, Dante decides to save Lucia instead of killing Arius, who manages to
escape.
Dante chases Arius, finding him in the middle of a ritual which will grant him immortality. He is
unfazed, as he had switched out part of the Arcana for a false coin. Dante is able to finally
defeat Arius with one of his pistols.
Lucia, still concerned about the revelation from Arius regarding her past, wants Dante to kill her
so that she does not become a demon. While discussing this, a portal to the demon world
opens before them. Dante and Lucia argue over who will close the portal, so Dante once again
flips a coin. It comes up heads, and Dante to enters the portal. There, he battles and defeats the
partially summoned Argosax.
Meanwhile, demonic power returns Arius to life. Lucia fights Arius, eventually defeating him.
Finding the portal closed behind him, Dante drives into the demon realm on a motorcycle.
In the aftermath of the battle, Matier insists that Sparda returned following similar circumstances.
Lucia examines the coin Dante left behind, discovering that both sides are identical.
Sometime later, in Dante’s shop, Lucia muses about Dante. Lucia hears a motorcycle and leaves
to investigate. We do not see whether Dante has returned.
In DMC2, we get more lore surrounding Dante’s past. We also see some of his trickery, with the
two-headed coin as an example.
